1. Workshop Proposals Sought for Fall Arts in Education Conference
May 15 is the deadline for submitting proposals to offer workshops at the statewide Arts Educations Partnership Conference, scheduled for October 30 to November 1 in the White Mountains. This year’s theme is “Maps & Journeys: Perspectives on the Future of Arts Education in New Hampshire.” Forms for submitting proposals, along with information about the conference, are on the Arts Council web site: http://www.nh.gov/nharts/newsandcalendar/AIE/aieconf.htm.

(Note: The proposal deadline is somewhat flexible; people who’d like to submit an idea for a conference session but need an extra week to put the proposal together should contact Catherine O’Brian at catherine.r.obrian@dcr.nh.gov.

2. Five organizations earn NEA grants
The National Endowment for the Arts has made its second round of grants for fiscal 2009, and it includes funds for five New Hampshire nonprofits. They are:

Bach With Verse, Nelson, $7,500
Category: Access to Artistic Excellence   Field/Discipline: Music
To support a tour of musical performances in state correctional and rehabilitation facilities. Approximately 40 solo and/or duet performances by double bassist/composer/storyteller Richard “Dobbs” Hartshorne and guest guitarist Lars Frandsen will take place in California, Connecticut, Maine, and New Hampshire.

Dartmouth College, Hanover, $60,000

To support presentations of influential works and residency activities at the Hopkins Center. Performer Meredith Monk, Pilobolus Dance Theatre, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and choreographer Trisha Brown will participate in workshops, post-performance discussions, school visits and matinees, master classes, and public discussions.

Monadnock Music, Peterborough, $22,500

To support Words into Music and On the Beaten Path II, thematic chamber concert programs. Composers Derek Bermel, Jonathan Elliott, Melinda Wagner, and Nathan Davis and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Richard Wilbur will participate in festival performances and activities at the Peterborough Town House.

Nashua Symphony Association, Nashua, $15,000

To support a statewide tour by the orchestra. Performances of New Hampshire composer Joseph Schwantner's orchestral work Chasing Light..., commissioned through the Ford Made In America program, will take place in the cities of Keene and Derry and in New Hampshire's North Country.

New Hampshire Mime Company, Portsmouth, $7,500
Category: Access to Artistic Excellence   Field/Discipline: Theater
To support Pontine Theatre’s Regional Touring Program. The project will provide performances and educational programs to the general public, schools, colleges, and senior care centers throughout New England.

3. Celebrate New Hampshire Poets Laureate
The Poetry Society of New Hampshire will celebrate New Hampshire’s Poets Laureate with “Reading under the Dome,” a reading by Walter Butts and Patricia Fargnoli, the current state poet laureate and his immediate predecessor. The event happens Saturday, June 20, at 3 p.m. at the New Hampshire State Library, 20 Park Street, Concord. Participants may bring a favorite poem by any of the New Hampshire poets laureate to share, time permitting. Light refreshments will follow. Contact poetrysocietyofnh@gmail.com for more information.
